6 Common Myths About Nose Jobs

Rhinoplasty Patient - ShumwayMost of us have at least one part of our bodies we aren’t thrilled about. For many people, it’s their nose. In fact, it’s the second most popular cosmetic surgery behind breast augmentation. Approximately 220,000 people went under the knife last year to enhance the appearance of their most prominent facial feature.

Despite its popularity, there are a lot of misconceptions surrounding rhinoplasty. If you’re unhappy with your nose due to cosmetic or medical reasons and are considering surgery to address the problem, read on as we take the opportunity dispel a few of the myths we commonly hear from our patients.

1. Rhinoplasty is a relatively simple operation

While it may seem like it’d be pretty easy for us to shave that bump off your nose and send you on your way, a nose job is actually a very delicate and precise procedure. When one part of the nose is changed, the others must be tweaked to ensure a good cosmetic outcome.

2. My nose will look plastic after a nose job

If you’ve seen photos of Michael Jackson, you know what a poorly performed rhinoplasty looks like – unnatural and obviously “done.” A good nose job performed by a board certified cosmetic surgeon, however, is harmonious with the rest of your face. It complements your other features and directs attention to your eyes and smile.

3. Any cosmetic surgeon can perform my nose job

As we mentioned, rhinoplasty is an incredibly precise operation. A millimeter can make a dramatic difference in your results. For this reason, it’s important to choose a surgeon who specializes in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Be sure your surgeon is board certified and has extensive experience performing nose jobs.

4. Rhinoplasty isn’t covered by insurance

If you’re seeking rhinoplasty purely for cosmetic reasons, like to smooth out a bump or to create a narrower nasal tip, your health insurance probably won’t pay for it. However, if you also have a functional problem, like a deviated septum that causes breathing difficulties, certain portions of your surgery may be covered.

5. My nose will look like my favorite celebrity’s nose

A rhinoplasty isn’t like a haircut – you can’t bring a photo of your favorite movie star to your surgeon and ask for the same look. Well, you can bring the photo, but nasal anatomy is very complex, and every patient’s face is different. A good cosmetic surgeon will provide you with a nose that fits your face shape and structure – not someone else’s.

6. A nose job comes with a long, painful recovery

This is surprisingly untrue. The recovery period for rhinoplasty is just 7- 10 days and is comparable to the feeling of getting over a bad cold. You’ll experience a moderate amount of nasal congestion, swelling, and possible bruising around the eyes. Any discomfort can be managed with prescription pain medication.
