What Is Breast Enhancement?
Breast enhancement, also known as breast augmentation, breast enlargement, breast implants, and mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure performed to enhance the breast size and breast shape. During the procedure, a breast implant is placed behind the natural breast tissue and is sometimes placed under the chest muscle. For enlargement procedures, a breast implant is a silicone shell filled with either saline (salt water) or silicone gel. The choice of implant type and placement depends on your goals, your current breast tissue, and your current body shape.
The Different Breast Enhancement Procedures
Is Breast Enlargement Right for Me?
Women elect to have breast enlargement surgery for a variety of reasons. Many choose to enlarge small or undeveloped breasts. Others choose to improve the appearance of asymmetrical breasts. Some choose to replace the shape and contour of breasts that decreased in size following pregnancy. During your consultation at Shumway Cosmetic Surgery, you will have an opportunity to discuss your goals and expectations with our Surgeon Dr. Shumway. He will then assess your breasts and help you decide which implant size, shape, placement, and approach is best for you.

Why Choose Dr. Shumway?
Dr. Shumway is the Founder and Director of Shumway Cosmetic Surgery located on the Scripps Memorial Hospital campus in La Jolla, California. He is the current President of the California Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and the former President of the American Society of Cosmetic Breast Surgery. He completed an extensive surgical training program at Duke University Medical Center. This program was followed by a fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Beverly Hills at UCLA. With over 11 years of surgical training and 12 additional years of breast enhancement experience, Dr. Shumway is the premier Transumbilical Breast Augmentation (TUBA) physician on the West Coast. Dr. Shumway is also a well known surgeon that provides all surgical approaches for the beautification of the breast.
How Is the Procedure Performed?
There are four common breast implantation surgical approaches, each named after the site of the incision. Dr. Shumway is internationally known for his expertise in the revolutionary procedure called Transumbilical Breast Augmentation, or TUBA, whereby the breast implants are inserted through a very small incision concealed inside the navel. Our surgeon also performs breast enhancement through the transaxillary method (armpit), periareolar method (around the nipple), and the inframammary fold approach (beneath the breast). Although Dr. Shumway performs all four breast implant approaches, the majority of his patients choose the TUBA approach for their breast enlargement. Dr. Shumway will fully discuss each method at your consultation and help you choose the placement and approach best suited for you.
Recovering from Breast Enhancement
Rest is recommended for the first few days following breast surgery. A post-surgical sports bra is typically worn for the first few weeks. Most discomfort associated with the breast surgery will be well-controlled with the oral pain medication prescribed by Dr. Shumway. Antibiotics will also be prescribed. Most patients report only mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness following the breast enhancement surgery. Many patients return to work within three days and resume their normal activities within four to six weeks.
