Chin Implants in La Jolla, CA
Shumway Cosmetic Surgery, accredited by the Joint Commission and awarded the Gold Seal of Approval which reflects our commitment to excellence and quality patient care, offers chin implants to local residents requiring cosmetic surgery.
As you consider how you would like to improve your appearance through cosmetic surgery, you may want to take a moment to look at your chin. Yes, your chin. Believe it or not, that small area at the bottom of your face not only gives you a convenient way to rest your head in your hand, but it also enhances or detracts from the balance of your face, second only to your nose. Having a weak chin affects your profile, and people consider an attractive profile to be one where the features of your face are in proportion with each other.
What Are Chin Implants?
Chin implants are used to add volume when you have a weak chin. The implants are similar in design to breast implants, but obviously much smaller. The implants come in a variety of sizes, and Dr. Shumway is able to determine which size is best to balance out your facial features.
Are Chin Implants Right for Me?
Dr. Shumway may recommend chin implants if he believes that your desire to improve your appearance can be met by enhancing your chin. If you meet with Dr. Shumway to discuss rhinoplasty, or a “nose job”, he may surprise you by recommending chin implants, as changing the size of your chin can actually help your nose look more in proportion with your face.
Why Choose Dr. Shumway?

An expert in his field, Dr. Robert A. Shumway, MD, FACS has studied at the nation’s finest medical centers and has taught cosmetic surgery techniques at Duke, UCLA, and UCSD. As a trustee of the California Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, he stresses the importance of close post-operative care, carefully instructing his patients on how to expedite their own healing and recovery.
Dr. Shumway evaluates each patient personally and considers techniques that will provide exceptional results with minimal downtime.
How Is the Chin Implant Procedure Performed?
General anesthesia is used for chin implants and the incisions are made under your jaw line and inside your bottom lip. The implant is inserted through the incision, and Dr. Shumway carefully positions the implant before closing the incision with sutures.
On the Road to Recovery
You will need to rest after your chin implant procedure, and you will wear a special compression head dressing. For the first seven to ten days, you may have some swelling, bruising, tenderness, and discomfort and you may have difficulty chewing your food, so Dr. Shumway usually recommends a soft diet to his chin implant patients. You should limit your activities for at least seven days.
