Genetics are an amazing thing. You inherited your mother’s eyes, your father’s sense of humor, your grandmother’s flawless complexion, and your Uncle Albert’s nose. You love your Uncle Albert, but his nose, not so much. Or maybe you were blessed with a perfect nose, but it took a decidedly crooked turn south when it met your airbag in that car crash, and now you’re having trouble breathing. Whatever your concerns regarding your nose, either cosmetic or functional, there is a solution: rhinoplasty.
Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) is a procedure that has been around for centuries. It continues to be one of the most popular procedures we do at Shumway Cosmetic Surgery. And because rhinoplasty surgery is a very delicate and precise procedure, even the smallest change can dramatically change your overall appearance, if you so choose.
There are two main types of nose surgery that we offer at Shumway Cosmetic Surgery in San Diego.
Rhinoplasty for Cosmetic Issues
Rhinoplasty is a surgery to reshape the nose to make it more aesthetically pleasing. The procedure can make the nose smaller or larger, have the nose set at a different angle, change the look of the tip or correct any issues, depending on the preferences of the patient
Septoplasty Resolves Medical Issues
If you have trouble breathing or other issues with your nose or nasal cavity, septoplasty is the way to go. Septoplasty is most commonly used to correct a deviated septum
These procedures can be used alone or together if you’re unhappy with both the appearance and function of your nose. Revisional or secondary surgery is done when you have had nose surgery and are dissatisfied with the results, whether functional or aesthetic.
Another option for those who are unhappy with the appearance of their nose is to use a rhinoplasty injectable. A non-surgical solution, injectables can’t alter the size of the nose, but they can build up parts of the nose, camouflage a bump, or create more symmetry. Shumway Cosmetic Surgery uses Radiesse®, a dermal filler with results lasting up to one year.
Whether you suffer from functional problems such as difficulty breathing due to a restricted airway or are just concerned about the look of your nose, rhinoplasty could be just the solution you’re seeking. And while most people are good candidates for rhinoplasty surgery, the following criteria are critical for a successful result:
If this sounds like you, the next step would be to schedule a consultation with Dr. Shumway at our La Jolla office in Southern California.
If you are unhappy with the appearance of your nose and it has bothered you for a long time, then rhinoplasty is the right option for you. The size and shape of your nose can have a drastic impact on your overall looks and how sexy you feel, and rhinoplasty can give you the confidence and boost in looks you so desire. This increase in confidence can make you a more successful and happy individual.
However, it is important to go into rhinoplasty with realistic expectations. The procedure is not going to immediately transform you into a supermodel. Rather, it will make tweaks to your appearance to give your nose a more aesthetically pleasing shape and/or size. If you go into the procedure with realistic expectations and are fully aware of what the procedure and recovery will consist of, then rhinoplasty is the right option for you.
Shumway Cosmetic Surgery is located in sunny La Jolla, California, part of the easily accessible San Diego area.
Dr. Robert A. Shumway, MD, FACS is an expert in the field of cosmetic surgery. He received his credentials at the nation’s most prestigious medical centers and has been a cosmetic surgery instructor at Duke, UCLA, and UCSD. Dr. Shumway stresses the importance of close post-operative care and carefully instructs patients through both the surgical and recovery process.
Dr. Shumway always evaluates each patient personally. He will carefully consider which techniques will best work for you and will provide exceptional results with minimal downtime.
There are two basic types of nose surgery techniques: closed and open. Which is best for you depends on many factors, and Dr. Shumway will discuss both techniques with you at your consultation.
Closed rhinoplasty means that all incisions are done inside the nose, through the nostrils, so there is no visible evidence of the surgery. Closed rhinoplasty allows for quick healing and no visible scarring, however it has some limitations. Closed rhinoplasty is mostly used in simpler and less complex surgeries. If you have a complex issue with your nose, then we suggest open rhinoplasty.
In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made across the small column of skin at the base of the nose between your nostrils. This allows the surgeon access to the bones and cartilage that make up the structure of the nose. At this point, either cartilage and bone is removed, reshaped or tissue is added to create the shape and look you desire.
This technique allows for more exposure and is helpful in more complex situations. The length of the healing period from open rhinoplasty is generally a bit longer than closed rhinoplasty, and while there may be scarring, it is usually very minimal.
For most patients, the rhinoplasty procedure is relatively brief; many can be performed in approximately an hour.
During the surgery, Dr. Shumway will carefully reshape your bones and cartilage to achieve the desired result. After surgery, a small plastic splint is often worn for 5 to 7 days to maintain the new shape and provide protection for your “new nose”.
The recovery period is generally quite painless for most rhinoplasty patients. Minimal bruising and swelling around the nose and eyes is common, but most patients will experience little discomfort. “Taking it easy” is about all that is needed, along with keeping your head elevated and applying cold compresses to keep swelling at bay.
Most rhinoplasty patients can return to normal activities, such as work or school, in about a week. At that time your “new nose” will likely be looking better than your “pre-surgery nose”. While visible improvements are seen almost immediately, it does take several months for swelling to completely subside.
Depending on the reason for your nose surgery, cosmetic or functional, your nose can look dramatically different or basically the same depending on what you desire. End results and expectations will be discussed at length in your consultation with Dr. Shumway.
The cost of your rhinoplasty will depend on the extent of surgery that is needed for your individual anatomy and cosmetic goals. The procedure may be covered by your insurance if you are having the procedure for medical reasons, such as repair after trauma or breathing problems caused by the internal structures of your nose. We offer payment plans and work closely with CareCredit™ to help you with the cost of your rhinoplasty.
