You will need to perform daily massage (manipulation) of the breast implants following surgery in order to properly keep the “pocket” open. Following breast augmentation, there is usually some incapacity or discomfort. This must be accepted with the realization that it is temporary. There is usually some minor swelling as well as numbness to the nipples, which will subside.

Signs of Capsular Contracture After Breast Augmentation?

A common problem with any type of breast implantation is firmness. The implant itself does not become firm; rather, the firmness is due to the formation of excessive scar tissue around the implant. The incidence of contracture varies upon a number of factors including, but not limited to, implant type, tobacco use, auto-immune disease, and individual patient healing. If excessive firmness develops, you may benefit by re-opening the incision and splitting the scar capsule which has formed around the implant. This secondary surgery would not be considered until four to six months following the original surgery.

Women who have only a slight amount of sagging and wish to have fuller breasts should choose to just have a breast augmentation. Women who have a more significant amount of sagging but who do not wish to have bigger breasts should choose a lift. During your complimentary consultation, Dr. Shumway will make his best recommendation according to your specific needs.
