Let’s be honest – we all want a perfect body. But the reality is that most of us have excess fat where we’d rather not have it and lack volume in places where we want more fullness, such as the face, hands, or breasts. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could take fat from one part of your body and transfer it to another area that needs a little oomph?
This may sound like wishful thinking, but it’s not. Fat transfer does precisely this though a safe, long-lasting procedure that yields natural-looking results.
What is fat transfer?
As the name suggests, fat transfer involves taking excess fat from one part of your body and injecting it into another area where you’d like more volume. The fat can be harvested from anywhere you have extra cushion, like your stomach, hips, or thighs.
Am I a good candidate for fat transfer?
Fat transfer is ideal for patients between the ages of 30 and 65 who are in good general health. A patient must also have donor sites from which fat can be taken. Of course, a positive attitude and realistic expectations are important, too.
The best candidates for fat transfer will identify with one or more of the following:
- You want to smooth laugh lines, smile lines, or crows feet
- You desire a modest increase in breast size
- You want a more permanent solution than temporary fillers can provide
- You want to reconstruct your breasts or hide obvious signs of implants
- You wish to rejuvenate your hands or face for a youthful look
- You desire fuller, more rounded buttocks
How is fat transfer performed?
Using local anesthesia, fat is extracted from the donor area using a special syringe. The fat is then cleansed of any impurities. Next, your doctor will carefully re-inject the fat into the treatment site, passing in and out of the skin several times to deposit the fat into natural tissue planes. This process can take anywhere from two to four hours, and most patients are able to resume their normal activities within a few days.
What type of results can I expect?
As with any cosmetic procedure, you should expect to have some mild swelling, bruising, and discomfort after fat transfer. As the swelling subsides, you’ll notice that the areas where the fat was injected are softer and fuller, giving you a more youthful and voluminous appearance. Any lines and wrinkles you had will be gone! The results of fat transfer are permanent, however, touchup procedures may be necessary.
Are you considering fat transfer?
How many times have you caught yourself standing in front of the mirror, wishing you could shrink your thighs and boost your cup size in one fell swoop? If you’re struggling to count, you may be a perfect candidate for fat transfer.
