Otoplasty in La Jolla, CA
Shumway Cosmetic Surgery, accredited by the Joint Commission and awarded the Gold Seal of Approval which reflects our commitment to excellence and quality patient care, offers otoplasty to local residents requiring cosmetic surgery.
Your ears are complex structures that are specially designed to help you hear, but your ears also affect your appearance by creating balance with your face. Having ears that are too big or little, stand away from your head too much, or are misshapen distracts people from seeing the natural beauty of your face.
What Is Otoplasty?
Dr. Shumway may recommend otoplasty, or ear surgery, for medical or cosmetic reasons to improve the shape and size of your ears. His recommendation may be based on one or more of the following concerns with the outer portion of your ear.
- The angle of your ear in relation to your head may be considered prominent, making your ears appear out of proportion with your head and face.
- Having too much cartilage in the outer ear structure can cause the ears to appear more prominent.
- Having too little cartilage in the outer ear structure can cause the ears to appear too small and may even affect the ability to hear properly.
- The shape and size of the ears may be affected by injuries and trauma.
Is Otoplasty Right for Me?

How Is Otoplasty Performed?
Otoplasty is a medical term that covers a range of surgical procedures to improve the shape, size, and position of your ears. If you have an outer ear structure that is too small, Dr. Shumway may recommend ear augmentation while ear reduction is recommended for patients who have ears that are too large. Protruding ears are typically improved with a procedure known as “otopexy” where the ears are “pinned back”. Typically, adults have the surgery with only IV sedation and local anesthesia, but children usually require general anesthesia.
On the Road to Recovery
A bandage is placed around your ears and remains in place for up to three days after your surgery. You will not be able to wash your hair while wearing the bandages. Once the bandages are removed, you will wear a loose-fitting headband at night to protect your ears while you sleep. Rest is an important part of your recovery, so you will need to stay home for one week and avoid exercise and other high-energy activities for two weeks. For the first three months, your ears are susceptible to trauma, so you should avoid any and all activities that may result in injury to your ears, and you should not swim for at least two months after your procedure. Dr. Shumway may prescribe antibiotics and pain medication to help you heal properly and remain comfortable. You may have some numbness, swelling, bruising, and tenderness until your ears are fully healed.
