About Restylane

San Diego, CA cosmetic surgeon Dr. Robert Shumway provides a wide range of dermal filler injections to help correct signs of aging, addressing wrinkles, lines, and lost volume. Restylane is a popular brand of injectable dermal fillers since it treats many issues with specialized formulas for results that last. It uses a synthetic version of the body’s natural HA (hyaluronic acid), providing the complexion a softer, natural appearance that is fuller and supple. A personal dermal filler plan can correct mild, moderate, or severe facial wrinkles and lines, and also add fullness to the cheeks and lips. Shumway Cosmetic Surgery carries many Restylane injectables, including:

  • Restylane: Corrects facial folds and wrinkles
  • Restylane Defyne: Treats moderate to severe laugh and smile wrinkles
  • Restylane Lyft: Creates lift and volume in the mid-face
  • Restylane Refyne: Treats light to moderate laugh and smile wrinkles

Restylane uses hyaluronic acid to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that’s naturally produced by your body and found in great concentration in the skin, where it helps retain collagen and increase moisture. As you age, your body produces less hyaluronic acid. Restylane products temporarily replenish it and enhance the contours of your face by hydrating your skin and restoring lost volume. Restylane is a powerful anti-aging treatment for Crow’s feet, corners of the mouth, smile lines, smoker’s lines, marionette lines, nasolabial lines, and the hollowness under the eyes. Restylane can also be used to plump the lips. Results are immediate but may take a while to “settle.” Products in the Restylane family provide youthful results that last between 6 – 18 months, depending on the product used and area treated.

Restylane – Ideal Candidates

Restylane dermal fillers are suitable for any person 21 years old or older who would like to refresh their overall appearance. Since it has several formulas, your treatment plan will be personalized to meet your needs. Restylane may help you address initial signs of aging, such as fine facial lines, or increase the fullness in your cheeks and lips. It may also improve severe wrinkles, like frown lines, laugh lines, Crow’s feet, marionette lines, nasolabial folds, and more. Certain treatments have the anesthetic lidocaine so you need to share any allergies at your pre-treatment consultation with Dr. Shumway to prevent a negative reaction.

Restylane – Procedure Technique

Restylane treatments are performed in the office at Shumway Cosmetic Surgery by Dr. Shumway. A numbing cream may be put on the treatment areas for greater comfort if desired. The filler is injected in your skin with a fine-gauge needle and then massaged so it reaches the selected areas. Several injections may be performed followed by a cold compress to reduce inflammation. Every Restylane filler is injected with the same technique but on different treatment areas based on your unique concerns and cosmetic goals.

Restylane – What to Expect

Once your Restylane treatment is finished, you may resume normal activities. Your recovery period will vary based on what you are having treated so ask Dr. Shumway about what you should expect. The treated areas may be slightly swollen and red, but this typically fades away within a day. Bruising may occur, but this may be camouflaged with cosmetics. It’s suggested that you avoid strenuous activity for a day, and you should sleep with the head propped up for at least one night. Many patients will see visible changes right after the procedure, but it usually takes 1 – 2 weeks until the final results develop. Restylane injections typically last around one year based on the formula selected.

Restylane – FAQs

How much does Restylane cost?
Costs for Restylane injections will be based on several things, like which product is selected, where it is used, the amount of filler used, and more. In your Restylane consultation, Dr. Shumway will need to understand your goals before creating a custom injection plan. After this, costs can be estimated and we can review payment options.

What is Restylane most commonly used for?
The Restylane family of dermal fillers are each formulated to help you appear refreshed but natural. In your initial consultation, your injector will explain the various formulas and decide which fits your needs. Restylane Lyft, Refyne, and Defyne improve mild, moderate, or deep folds and wrinkles. Restylane Lyft increases volume in your lips, cheeks, and hands.

How often do I need to come back for a touch-up?
Typically, Restylane injections last from 6 – 18 months. Your results will vary based on which formula is selected, the injection sites, and other factors. In your initial consultation, your injector will create your injection plan, including when to make your next appointment to refresh your appearance.
