What is Revision Rhinoplasty?
When a patient needs to have a second nose job, it’s called revision rhinoplasty. A patient can request a revision rhinoplasty if they want additional improvements beyond their first nose job. A revision rhinoplasty should improve the nose’s function and appearance. It’s not uncommon for a patient to want a revision rhinoplasty if they are unhappy with how their nose functions or its aesthetics after their first procedure.
Benefits of Revision Rhinoplasty
There are many benefits for patients looking to undergo a revision rhinoplasty at Shumway Cosmetic Surgery. If you’re having problems breathing or are unhappy with how your nose looks after a previous rhinoplasty, then consider having a revision procedure. The advantages a revision procedure offers include:
- Better breathing. It will improve how your nose functions.
- Aesthetic Improvements. It will change the shape of your nose for the better.
How Soon After My First Surgery Can I Have A Revision Done?
At Shumway Cosmetic Surgery, we recommend that patients wait one year after their first rhinoplasty before having a revision. This will allow the nose to heal completely.

How is a Revision Rhinoplasty Performed?
Before performing a revision rhinoplasty, Dr. Shumway consults with patients to determine their reasons for wanting the procedure. Such reasons may include improving its function, aesthetics or both. After confirming a patient wants a revision rhinoplasty and what they want to change or improve, Dr. Shumway discusses the treatment plan concerning the revision rhinoplasty.
The patient will be put under general anesthesia before their procedure begins. The revision rhinoplasty will be either an open or closed procedure, depending on the patient’s needs. In some cases, Dr. Shumway will repair a patient’s nose with a grafting procedure using cartilage, particularly if there are problems with the cartilage after their first surgery. When Dr. Shumway adds cartilage to a patient’s nose, he takes it from another part of their bodies, such as the ears, ribs, or septum. Dr. Shumway will also reposition and reshape the bones and cartilage in the nose to improve its appearance. If a patient is having difficulty breathing, then he will widen the nasal passages.
Where Are The Incisions Made For Revision Rhinoplasty?
Revision rhinoplasty is performed as either an open or closed procedure. When an open revision rhinoplasty is performed, a tiny incision is made on the underside of the nose, on the column of skin that’s in between the nostrils. With the closed technique, all incisions are made within the interior of the patient’s nose.
Are There Scars From Revision Rhinoplasty?
If a patient undergoes a closed revision rhinoplasty, then they should not have any visible scarring due to the incisions being made on the inside of the nose. Patients who have an open revision rhinoplasty will have a very tiny, barely noticeable scar on the underside of their nose.
Preparing for a Revision Rhinoplasty
Before having revision rhinoplasty, we recommend that patients avoid taking ibuprofen, aspirin, and any other anti-inflammatory medications in order to prevent excessive bleeding. We also recommend avoiding any dietary supplements (vitamins) and herbs for several days prior to the procedure. Patients should also refrain from smoking cigarettes and consuming alcoholic beverages.
Revision Rhinoplasty Recovery
When a revision rhinoplasty procedure calls for Dr. Shumway to graft cartilage or manipulate the nasal bones, he will generally put the patient’s nose in a formed plastic splint with soft packing material placed inside of it in order to reduce the bleeding. Most patients will have minor discomfort for several days following the procedure. The bruising on the face will fade completely after approximately 10 days. We recommend that patients avoid strenuous activity for two to three weeks after their procedure. It typically takes one month for most patients’ noses to heal enough so that it doesn’t look like they had surgery.
