Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty) in La Jolla, CA with Dr. Robert A. Shumway
Excess skin around the eyes can make you look older and more tired than you feel. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift surgery, removes excess fat, muscle, and skin from the upper and/or lower eyelids to refresh your appearance and, in some cases, improve vision. Dr. Robert A. Shumway performs eyelid lift surgery for patients in La Jolla and the greater San Diego area, bringing training from institutions including Duke, UCLA, and UCSD, where he also taught cosmetic surgical techniques to other physicians.
Many patients come to Dr. Shumway after feeling like their eyes no longer reflect how youthful and alert they feel, and they leave with a smoother, more rested appearance that still looks like them, not “done.”

During your consultation, Dr. Shumway will evaluate your eyelid skin, muscle tone, and fat distribution to determine whether upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both would best meet your goals.
What Surgical Techniques Does Dr. Shumway Use for Blepharoplasty?
Depending on the complexity of your eyelid surgery, some form of anesthesia is given, and treatment may include the upper eyelid by itself, the bottom eyelid on its own, or a blend of both upper and lower eyelids.
- Upper eyelid For the upper eyelid, Dr. Shumway places an incision along the natural lash line or eyelid crease to remove excess skin and fat, restoring a more open, alert appearance. Because the incision follows the eye’s natural crease, it typically heals to become virtually invisible once swelling resolves.

This combination approach allows Dr. Shumway to address both the underlying puffiness and the surface texture of t
