Blepharoplasty: Beautiful Solutions for Healthy, Youthful Eyelids

01 September 2017 / By shumway

While there are many qualities that make up a beautiful face, poets have always pointed to the eyes as most important. Eyes communicate emotions, and they are often the first thing that you notice about a new acquaintance. Sophia Loren said, “Beauty is how you feel woman-getting-eyelid-surgeryinside, and it reflects in your eyes,” and Audrey Hepburn said, “The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart – the place where love resides.”
Unfortunately, the skin around your eyes is the first area to show signs of aging. Many people discover that as they grow older, their eyelids begin to sag and they develop bags underneath their eyes.  offers a solution that reduces the signs of aging above and below the eyes, restoring the area to a youthful, healthy appearance.

How Aging Impacts the Appearance Your Eyes

As skin ages, it loses the underlying layer of fat that prevents wrinkles from forming. Good nutrition is key to delaying this change, along with staying away from cigarette smoking and sun exposure. Though these important lifestyle choices make a difference in how quickly the skin around your eyes ages, eventually, you will start to see changes.

One of the most noticeable occurs when fat from the eyelids shifts to the eye sockets. Your eyes start to appear a bit sunken. As the muscles of your eyelids weaken, your eyelids may droop. For some, this drooping significantly impacts vision – particularly peripheral vision. The skin underneath your eyes changes also, losing its firm, taut appearance. This causes the phenomenon of “bags” under your eyes.

Blepharoplasty Basics

Fortunately, there is a solution to sagging eyelids and under-eye bags. Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat, muscle and skin as appropriate to restore the healthy, youthful appearance of your eyes. Any vision issues related to sagging eyelids can also be corrected with this procedure.

Typically, this is an outpatient surgery with a short recovery time. After providing you with appropriate medications to ensure you are comfortable and relaxed, your practitioner makes a small incision to repair and correct any issues with your upper and lower eyelids. The incision is made where you have natural creases in your skin, so any scarring is practically invisible. Once the procedure is complete, your patient care team will monitor you for a few hours to ensure you don’t have any reactions to the medication, and then you are able to complete your recovery at home.

Temporary side effects of blepharoplasty include light sensitivity, swelling, bruising and puffiness. However, with the proper care, these side effects subside quickly. You will use ice packs and anti-biotic ointment or drops to speed your healing, and you will probably have to avoid strenuous activities for at least a week. Most patients find these inconveniences minor when compared to the benefits of blepharoplasty – particularly improvements in their appearance and restoration of lost vision.

Is Blepharoplasty Right for You?

Though many people can benefit from blepharoplasty, a surgical solution for sagging eyelids and under eye bags isn’t the best option for everyone. Ideal candidates for this procedure share some or all of the following characteristics:

  • Good Health – Though blepharoplasty is a fairly simple procedure, your body has to do some healing afterwards. Candidates for this surgery should be in good health. In particular, you should be free from any condition that might impair your ability to heal, and you may not be eligible for blepharoplasty if you suffer from skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
  • Non-Smoker – Cigarette smoking and blepharoplasty are a tough combination, and ideally, candidates for the procedure should be non-smokers. The carbon monoxide and nicotine in cigarettes reduces blood flow, which is critical to healing quickly and safely. Your physician may have concerns about excessive scarring and infections if you are a smoker, so it is important to disclose your smoking habits during your consultation.
  • Healthy Eyes – Serious eye-related conditions can be exacerbated by blepharoplasty. In particular, ongoing issues with dry eyes may be of concern to your physician.
  • Positive Outlook – While blepharoplasty can make have important benefits for the appearance of your eyes, along with solving vision issues caused by sagging eyelids, no surgical procedure can completely eliminate signs of aging. Before you proceed with blepharoplasty, think about what you expect from the procedure, and discuss your expectations with your physician. Make sure that you understand what sort of results you will see after going through blepharoplasty, and that you will be satisfied with a realistic outcome.
