Gynecomastia Surgery | La Jolla, CA | Dr. Robert Shumway

Gynecomastia surgery may translate into “male breast reduction” for you. However, taking away breast tissue from a man’s chest with a unique surgical approach specifically designed to improve a man’s body contours means much more to the men having it done. It is understandable that men with enlarged male breasts may feel self-conscious about their chest, especially in situations where the upper body and chest are seen, such as at the beach, pool, or at the gym, especially here in sunny California. Choosing gynecomastia surgery can mean a more masculine chest contour and greater confidence, in short, the surgery can be life changing for most men.  As a diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and our cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Robert A. Shumway has spent decades adapting his gynecomastia surgery techniques to enhance the masculine features of his male patients. Our gynecomastia treatment will enhance your masculine features and send your confidence through the roof.  Schedule a consultation today to see if this male cosmetic surgery for gynecomastia at Shumway Cosmetic Surgery is right for you.

What Is Gynecomastia?

The medical term gynecomastia is used to describe enlarged male breasts, and it affects between 40 – 60% percent of adolescent and adult men. Gynecomastia causes excess breast tissue and feminine-looking breasts. It can resolve on its own, especially following puberty; however, persistent gynecomastia may require surgical treatment to remove excess breast tissue or fat.  While there’s no doubt gynecomastia has an impact on physical appearance, it can also cause mental and emotional distress, which can lead to embarrassment or shame or even hinder physical or intimate activities.  Luckily, a male breast reduction can address excess breast tissue through liposuction and the surgical removal of excess tissue. The remaining tissue is used to create a tighter and more masculine appearance. Gynecomastia surgery reduces male breast size and minimizes the appearance of:
  • Localized Fat
  • Glandular Tissue
  • Breast Skin

The Causes of Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia can have many causes, but most cases are caused by hormone fluctuations that cause excess breast tissue growth, and it can impact adolescent and adult males.  Causes of gynecomastia can include:
  • Puberty – Gynecomastia can begin in puberty, but typically it resolves in 1 to 2 years
  • Aging – Hormone levels shift around age 55
  • Medications – Including antidepressants, blood pressure drugs, certain antibiotics, or herbal supplements
  • Obesity – Fat increase can stimulate estrogen production, leading to breast growth
  • Certain drugs that impact hormones, including methamphetamines, marijuana, heroin, and even alcohol
  • Anabolic steroids
  • Genetic predisposition
Gynecomastia can affect both fat and excess breast tissue; however, pseudogynecomastia, or false gynecomastia, is often seen in those who are obese, as fat collects around, behind, or underneath the nipples.

Ideal Candidates for La Jolla Gynecomastia

Male breast reduction surgery is reserved for men who have enlarged breasts that cannot be reduced through a healthy lifestyle or exercise and diet changes. If you feel bothered by the appearance of your chest, but are otherwise physically healthy, you could possibly benefit from gynecomastia surgery by Dr. Shumway at Shumway Cosmetic Surgery.  Teenagers may also attain positive results from male breast reduction surgery; however, a secondary procedure may be warranted later as an adult if abnormal excess breast tissue continues to form. In your initial consultation with Dr. Shumway, he will perform a physical examination of your breast tissue and explain your gynecomastia treatment options, including the possibility of undergoing surgery to correct the condition. A diagnostic blood panel to check hormone levels and imaging may be necessary for a gynecomastia diagnosis.

Gynecomastia Treatments

BHRT

In conjunction with surgical gynecomastia treatments, Dr. Shumway offers Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) to gynecomastia patients. Fluctuating and decreasing hormone levels throughout your life – during puberty or due to aging – can cause unwelcome symptoms, including gynecomastia. Shifting hormones can also impact your mood, make you feel tired, or even give you that “off” feeling with no explanation. Dr. Shumway is highly trained in BHRT and customizes treatments to help balance your hormones to increase your energy and improve your quality of life, including addressing the root causes of gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia – Surgical Technique

Dr. Shumway generally utilizes liposuction during gynecomastia surgery. With the patient safely under general anesthesia, liposuction reduces pockets of fat and excess breast tissue from the internal chest region. Afterward, any skin showing laxity will be removed to produce a more tightened look, and then the areola and nipple will be surgically reshaped and placed into a proper position.  For most men, gynecomastia surgery requires an incision close to where the glandular tissue collects. After the pockets of excess breast tissue, fat, and skin have been removed, Dr. Shumway will pull and tighten the remaining skin.

What to Expect During Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery

Following your gynecomastia surgery, your chest will be secured with a compression bandage to help control bruising and swelling. For complex cases where a reconstructive method was used, a small tube for draining may be placed to help with fluid. Any incisions made during gynecomastia surgery take several weeks to heal and any scars left behind are barely seen.  After male breast reduction surgery, the outcome is almost immediately noticeable, and most men are extremely satisfied with the cosmetic enhancement. With your new, masculine-appearing chest, Dr. Shumway will guide you to resuming exercise and weight training, which will extend the end results.

La Jolla Gynecomastia – FAQ’s

How much does male breast reduction cost?

Excessive male breast tissue (gynecomastia) is a medical problem that is best handled by an experienced surgeon. For this reason, Dr. Shumway suggests you focus on how to get your best results rather than costs. To make male breast reduction surgery fit your budget, Shumway Cosmetic Surgery takes several payment methods, and we can help you locate low-interest financing. In most cases, gynecomastia surgery is considered cosmetic and not covered by insurance. However, coverage may be possible if the condition causes significant physical discomfort or psychological distress. We recommend contacting your provider to review specific policy details.

What causes gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia develops in men when there is an imbalance in the hormones. Typically, gynecomastia is connected to the use of androgens and anabolic steroids. Gynecomastia might also be triggered by some medical conditions (hyperthyroidism, hypogonadism, and tumors) or some medications (chemotherapy or anti-anxiety medications).

How can I tell if I have gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia occurs in men when there is an overgrowth of breast tissue in the chest, which can cause swelling, pain, and tenderness. Some patients might have pseudogynecomastia (false gynecomastia) so Dr. Shumway suggests patients lose weight by following an exercise plan and healthy diet before considering gynecomastia correction surgery. If you have excess breast tissue when you are at a healthy weight, Dr. Shumway will perform a physical exam and order diagnostic tests. This might include a mammogram, blood tests, or a biopsy to look for other causes, like an infection of breast tissue (mastitis) or cancer.

Can gynecomastia be treated with exercise or pills?

Male breast reduction surgery is the most effective treatment for gynecomastia. Currently, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) hasn’t approved any medications for the treatment of gynecomastia. Although they aren’t approved for gynecomastia, a few breast cancer medications (Raloxifene or Tamoxifen) might give you minimal improvements. Upper body weight training to increase the pectoral muscles will not reduce the excess breast tissue and could even make the breasts look bigger.

Will this fix puffy or pointy nipples?

Puffy or pointy nipples may be caused by glandular gynecomastia. If you are concerned about this, be sure to tell Dr. Shumway at your consultation. He will personalize your surgical plan to select the best incision pattern and technique to improve your nipples. Oversized areolas may also be corrected in surgery for gynecomastia. It is crucial to be open with Dr. Shumway about all your concerns and wants during your initial consultation so he can make sure you get the best results.

What are the symptoms of gynecomastia?

  • Enlarged breast tissue, often felt as a firm or rubbery mass beneath the nipple
  • Breast tenderness or discomfort
  • Nipple discharge (in rare cases)
  • Skin irritation or chafing due to excess breast tissue

Can gynecomastia be prevented?

While there’s no guaranteed way to prevent gynecomastia, certain lifestyle choices may reduce your risk. Avoiding excessive alcohol, anabolic steroids, and illicit drugs can help. It’s also important to discuss potential side effects of medications with your doctor, especially those known to affect hormone levels.

Will gynecomastia surgery leave noticeable scars?

Dr. Shumway uses advanced techniques to minimize scarring following gynecomastia correction surgery. Incisions are typically small and strategically placed, often around the areola or in natural chest creases, to ensure they are as discreet as possible.

Is liposuction always part of gynecomastia surgery?

Not always. Dr. Shumway often uses liposuction when excess fat is present, but if glandular tissue is the primary issue, surgical excision may be required. In many cases, he will use a combination of both techniques to achieve optimal contouring.

What is recovery like after male breast reduction surgery?

After gynecomastia surgery, most patients can resume light activities within a few days and resume exercise after about 3 to 4 weeks after Dr. Shumway clears you to do so. Avoid lifting anything over 10 pounds for around a month. Swelling and bruising are normal and will gradually subside. Compression garments may be recommended to support healing and reduce swelling following gynecomastia surgery.

Can gynecomastia come back after surgery?

While gynecomastia surgery results are typically long-lasting, it can recur if triggered by factors like hormonal imbalances, certain medications, or significant weight gain. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and following Dr. Shumway’s post-operative instructions can help preserve your results.

How long does gynecomastia surgery take?

Male breast reduction surgery takes between 1 to 2 hours, depending on the extent of excess breast tissue, skin, and fat removal and whether liposuction is involved.

Will I need general anesthesia for gynecomastia surgery?

Yes, Dr. Shumway typically performs gynecomastia surgery under general anesthesia to ensure your comfort and safety throughout the procedure. During your initial gynecomastia consultation, Dr. Shumway will discuss your options.

How soon can I return to work after surgery?

Following male breast reduction surgery, most patients can return to light work within 3 to 5 days, but it’s important to avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for 3 to 4 weeks.

Are the results of male breast reduction surgery permanent?

Yes, the results of gynecomastia surgery are generally long-lasting, especially if the underlying cause, such as medication or hormone imbalance, is addressed. Maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle helps preserve your outcome.
