It probably won’t be surprising to hear that breast augmentation can make a woman feel super sexy and eager for a little fun in the bedroom. But if you’ve recently had a breast lift or received breast implants, it’s important not to move too fast. In order to avoid complications, you’ll need to give your body time to heal.
Take a look at our recommendations on how and when to approach sex after a breast augmentation.
WE RECOMMEND AVOIDING SEX IN THE FIRST TWO WEEKS
Your incisions will be prone to infection and bleeding with any more than a minimal amount of physical activity in the first two weeks. This means that in the two weeks following your breast augmentation, you should be resting your body as much as possible. Postponing sex while you heal will reduce the risk of:
- Wound disruption
- Disruption of implant placement
- Damage of internal stitches
- Hematoma (accumulation of blood around the implant) due to elevated heart rate
If you absolutely cannot wait, remaining on your back can help keep your heart rate from rising quite as much as it might otherwise. But remember, you’re still risking some of the above complications if you resume sex too soon after your breast augmentation.
KEEP IT GENTLE FOR SIX WEEKS
A month after your breast augmentation surgery, you may find that while you’re eager to get back in the bedroom, you’re not quite ready for an excessive amount of movement. Prepare to take it slow during this time, and have your partner start off gently with some light touching.
At this point, you’re free to get your heart rate up, but it’s important that you go at a pace that’s comfortable for you. Tell your partner what feels good as well as what you’re not ready for. If necessary, wear a bra or sports bra during sex to remind you both to stay gentle with “the girls.” Anything more than light touching could potentially dislodge your implants.
NO BOUNCING FOR 12 WEEKS
As your energy returns and your tenderness goes away, you’ll likely be up for more than you were in the first weeks after your breast augmentation. But if things get really rowdy, you may want to keep that sports bra on. Excessive bouncing while your breast tissue is still adjusting to the implants could cause the implants to stretch the skin and create a sagging appearance.
PREPARE FOR SOME UNEXPECTED CHANGES
You may have heard that some women experience a decrease in nipple sensation following breast augmentation. This is true for some, but not for all. Some women actually experience enhancednipple sensation. If you are among those who lose nipple sensitivity, don’t assume it means you won’t enjoy sex as much. In fact, you might even enjoy sex more after your breast augmentation.
Why?
Well, one study found that a significant number of women find it easier to achieve orgasm after breast augmentation. The reason for this isn’t entirely clear and may not be the same for each woman, but we do know that insecurities can hamper a person’s experience in the bedroom. It’s certainly possible that you will experience enhanced confidence as the result of your breast augmentation procedure. Whether that leads to better or easier orgasms…well, you never know until you try.
